Studio that cut ties with Dr Disrespect closes before game release, citing lack of funding

Game development studio Midnight Society is shutting down after three years of operation, leaving its unreleased game DEADROP permanently shelved. The studio, which employed 55 developers, announced its closure on January 30, 2024, citing a lack of funding as the primary reason.

Midnight Society's level designer Brad Boice revealed that employees received only two-day notice of the closure. The studio had previously undergone layoffs in September 2023, suggesting earlier financial difficulties.
The studio was initially founded with support from Guy "Dr Disrespect" Beahm, who was later removed from the project following controversy. Coincidentally, Dr Disrespect's YouTube channel was re-monetized on the same day as the studio's closure announcement.
DEADROP, an extraction shooter, was the studio's sole project in development. The game will now join the list of unreleased titles in gaming history, while its team members seek new opportunities in the industry.
