Spectre Divide Shuts Down - Shroud-Backed FPS Calls It Quits After 6 Months
Spectre Divide and its developer Mountaintop Studios are shutting down just six months after the game's launch. The competitive FPS, which featured popular streamer shroud as a gameplay advisor, will cease operations within 30 days according to a March 12 announcement.
Despite attracting 400,000 players initially, the game currently maintains only 10,000 concurrent players - insufficient to sustain operations. Mountaintop Studios CEO Nate Mitchell revealed that revenue failed to cover operational costs, and attempts to secure additional funding through publishers, investors, or acquisition proved unsuccessful.
Key Points:
- All purchases made since Season One (Feb. 25) will be refunded
- The game introduced innovative features like a two-body mechanic and emphasized teamwork
- Season One: Flashpoint brought console support and significant improvements
- Despite shroud's advisory role, the game was fully developed and owned by Mountaintop

The closure highlights the challenging nature of the gaming industry, particularly for indie studios trying to establish new IPs in the competitive FPS market. While Mountaintop made substantial improvements following launch feedback, it wasn't enough to achieve financial sustainability.
Community response has been predominantly sympathetic, with players acknowledging the game's quality while expressing concern about its short lifespan. The servers will remain online for approximately one month, giving players a final opportunity to experience the game before it permanently shuts down.
This closure adds to the growing list of gaming industry setbacks, including recent layoffs and studio closures, demonstrating the increasingly challenging environment for game developers, regardless of their innovative approaches or high-profile partnerships.
