Diana's Design and Development

Diana's concept was inspired by Lady Gaga, specifically from the Alejandro music video. She was intentionally designed as Leona's polar opposite, wielding a weapon based on both a Shotel and Khopesh. Nicole Oliver provides her voice in both League of Legends and Legends of Runeterra.

The champion's theme features vocals by Lisa 'Saiyaka' Thorn, who also created the Crescent Strike targeting indicator. During development, Moonfall was initially Diana's ultimate ability but was later reworked to improve her team fighting capabilities.

Lore and Character

Diana's weapon is crafted from Moonsilver, a magical metal forged under moonlight. Her hair transformed from black to silver upon becoming an Aspect. In June 2021, Riot officially confirmed Diana as part of the LGBTQIA+ community through the "Rise With Me" release, further reinforced during the 2023 Pride event.

Gameplay Elements

Diana features unique animations for both crowd control and movement speed buffs. Her Moonfall ability displays different lunar phases based on the number of affected enemies:

  • 1 enemy: New moon
  • 2 enemies: Waning crescent
  • 3 enemies: Last quarter
  • 4 enemies: Waning gibbous
  • 5 enemies: Full moon

Thematic References

Diana's name derives from the PIE root *dyew- meaning "to shine" and shares her name with the Roman goddess of the Moon. Her voice lines contain multiple references to Leona, including:

  • "The moon also rises"
  • "Chosen of the moon"
  • "Twilight fades"

Skin Lines

Diana appears in multiple themed skin lines including:

  • Lunar Revel
  • Blood Moon
  • Battle Queens
  • Sentinels of Light
  • Winterblessed
  • Heavenscale

Each skin places her in distinct alternate universes with unique visual and thematic elements, often alongside other champions sharing the same theme.
