Path of Exile 2 is set years after the original game on the same continent of Wraeclast, but you don't need to play the first game to enjoy the sequel. While having prior knowledge of the world can enhance your experience, both games are designed to be enjoyed independently.

The new game takes place in Wraeclast, a dark continent known as the land of the damned, filled with dangerous magic and fearsome enemies. The story revolves around a mysterious threat that's Corrupting the world and driving people mad - a threat that was supposedly destroyed long ago.

Key differences between the games:

  • New storyline independent from the first game
  • Updated mechanics, including a new Skill Gem system
  • Fresh take on familiar locations
  • Different timeline and setting

While veteran players will likely spot familiar elements and references, new players can jump straight into Path of Exile 2 without feeling lost. The game launches in early access on December 6, with an expected early access period of at least six months.

If you're not in a hurry to play Path of Exile 2, trying the original game first can help you determine if you enjoy the series' dark fantasy aesthetic and gameplay style. However, it's entirely optional and won't impact your ability to enjoy the sequel.
