League of Legends: The Beta Testing Journey - From Closed to Open Beta
League of Legends' beta testing phase occurred in two distinct stages during 2009, marking the game's development before its official release.
Closed Beta (April 11, 2009 - October 20, 2009):
- Limited access through invite system
- Each user received 5 invites to share
- Special beta key given to Facebook fans when page reached 40,000 followers
- All accounts reset to Level 1 at end of closed beta
- Players received exclusive King Rammus skin as compensation
Open Beta (October 21-27, 2009):
- Unrestricted access for all players
- Lasted one week
- Led directly to official game launch on October 27, 2009
Post-Beta Development:
- Pre-Season One began November 20, 2009
- First Free champion rotation implemented
- Game continued regular updates and improvements
Beta testing served to identify and fix bugs, improve usability, and ensure a smooth public release. This development phase was crucial in shaping League of Legends into a functional and player-ready game before its official launch.
Note: Beta testing is the second phase of software development after alpha testing, focusing on reducing glitches and bugs while ensuring feature completeness before public release.
