Gold is the primary currency in League of Legends used to purchase items that enhance champion abilities and statistics. Each champion can hold up to six items and one trinket simultaneously in their inventory.

Items provide three main types of effects:

  1. Stat Buffs
  • Directly improve champion statistics
  • Most common type of item enhancement
  1. Passive Effects
  • Constantly active while equipped
  • Similar to champion innate abilities
  • Include auras that affect nearby allies or enemies
  1. Active Effects
  • Must be manually triggered
  • Have cooldowns affected by item haste
  • Some use charge systems that require replenishing

Unique Effects prevent stacking in three ways:

  • Effect limitation: Prevents stacking of the same item
  • Named Effect limitation: Prevents stacking across different items
  • Item group limitation: Prevents purchase of items with same tag

Quality tiers organize most items, excluding consumables and boots. Some items can only be obtained through transformations, requiring specific conditions like:

  • Accumulating stacks
  • Completing explicit quests

All active effects share cooldowns across duplicate items, even if not all instances were activated. This system creates strategic depth in item selection and usage during matches.
